Múinteoir Norah 6.5.20

Hello 4th Class and Parents,

I hope you all had a lovely bank holiday weekend and you are keeping well.

It has been fantastic to see some of the work that you are doing via Aladdin Connect. Thank you, parents, for taking the time to upload the pictures.

For those who haven’t access to Aladdin Connect, you can email any work the students are proud of and would like to share to the email admin@naascns.ie.

This week I hope you will be able to carry out a little history project, some of the other classes are doing this too, and it will be lovely to see what interesting things we can learn about life in the past from older relatives and friends.

Best wishes,

M. Norah

Maths

  • Time: Brainstorm everything you know about time. You might write down words like hours, days, months, seconds etc.
  • Think about the following questions:

What time do you usually…eat your dinner/go to bed/get up/watch TV?

Look at the PowerPoint to help revise reading the time in 5-minute intervals.

Play the game at the link below. Perhaps start at a lower level and work your way up to reading the time in 1-minute intervals on the analogue clock.

https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/116/telling_the_time#

Please find attached a PDF Time Worksheet if you would like more practice at reading the time.

English and SESE

  • History Project – Interview a grandparent or older family relative about their lives when they were younger.

Earlier this year, we learnt about people working in science and technology when we studied The Story of Firsts. We brainstormed ‘familiar firsts’ (i.e. recent inventions) such as smart phones, tablets, games consoles and learnt about important inventions such as X-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI.

  • Your task is to write a list of questions that you would ask while interviewing a grandparent or family member on how life has changed since he or she was younger. Specifically think about items that children use now, which were not available in the past.

What alternatives did they use?

What games did they play?

What did they make for fun?

How different was their home life and school classroom compared to your home and school now?

What food did they eat?

  • Once you have your questions prepared you are ready to carry out your interview. Remember to do your best listening. Write out your interview. Tomorrow you can edit and then publish your project.
  • DEAR Time.

Irish

  • An seomra Suí – The Sitting Room

Let’s name all the items we usually find in the sitting room:

Lampa = Lamp

Grianghraf = Photograph

Clog = Clock

Scáthán = Mirror

Cuirtíní = Curtains

Dallóg = Blinds

Cianrialtán = Remote control

Tolg = Couch

Bord = Table

Aon rud eile? Can you add anything else?

https://www.focloir.ie/ is an excellent online dictionary if you want to look up any words.

Play the game Feicim le mo shúilín beag, rud a thosaíonn le ‘c’… (I spy with my little eye, something beginning with ‘c’…) to practice using the new vocabulary.

Maths

  • Time: How long do you usually spend…sleeping/eating/awake/walking/watching TV?

Carry out a time audit at home. Find how long it takes to do two things: eat breakfast and dinner; do your homework and help around the house; sleep and dress.

Play the game at the link below to revise reading the analogue clock in words. Again, there are different levels that you can choose to try.

https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/117/telling_the_time_in_words#

Or teach someone the game Buzz or similar using your maths tables.

English and SESE

  • History Project: Look and read the questions and answers you have from your interview. Edit your work. Underline any edits in red pen. Check your capital letters, full stops, punctuation, spellings etc.

Publish your project in your best handwriting, perhaps draw some pictures to illustrate and add colour. You can continue to work on this tomorrow if you do not get it finished.

  • DEAR Time

Irish

  • Tarraing pictiúr do sheomra suí.  Draw a picture of your living room.

Can you label the things in your living room?

Extension: Scríobh faoi do sheomra. Can you describe where things are.

Mar shampla:

Tá lampa taobh thiar den tolg. A lamp is behind the couch.

Tá cuirtíní agus dallóg ar an bhfuinneog. Curtains and blinds are on the window.

Tá bláthanna ar an mbord. Flowers are on the table.

Tá cianrialtán ar an mbord. A remote control is on the table.

Tá mo mhadra faoin mbord. My dog is under the table.

Tá clog ar an matal os coinn na tinne. A clock is on the mantelpiece above the fire.

Tá scáthán ar an mballa. A mirror is on the wall.

Maths

  • Time: Create a timetable of a recent typical day at home.

Extension Activity: You are the manager of a busy TV station, create a timetable showing the day’s schedule. Use your imaginations.

Next week we will continue with this topic.

English

  • Finish your History Project.
  • My Read at Home page 92 Irish English Q 1-5.

Series: My Read at Home

Title: My Read at Home Book 4

Available at: https://www.cjfallon.ie/

  • DEAR Time

Irish

  • Léitheoireacht. Reading

Read Clár Dúlra page 72 in your book Léigh sa Bhaile

  • If you have internet access, I would recommend going onto https://www.cjfallon.ie/  where you can access Léigh sa Bhaile.
  • You will see Important Notice on the homepage offering you free access to the books. You will then see a table with different columns.
  • From the left-hand side tick Primary > 4th Class > Gaeilge > Léigh sa Bhaile > Léigh sa Bhaile Leabhar 4 > and then in the final resource column, if you untick the online book it will bring up the option for audio. You can access the mp3 audio recording of the comprehensions.
  • I would encourage children to listen to the recording a few times whilst following the text, then read along and finally read independently.
