I hope you are all keeping well. Catherine says hello and looks forward to seeing you when we go back to school.

Maths

  • Measures. Area.

Area is the amount of space inside a given shape.

We measure area in square centimetres (cm²) or square metres (m²).

Find two objects in your house that are rectangular in shape.

For example, perhaps the surface of your table and your copy / notebook. Which object has the biggest area?

Can you think of three things with an area of less than one square centimetre?

Can you think of three things with an area greater than one square centimetre?

Draw a square centimetre.

  • Read for 20 minutes from any book or story you have at home.

Make a list of any new words you come across, then look them up in a dictionary and write the meaning(s) beside the word.

Challenge yourself: Can you use it in a sentence? Can you think of a synonym (another word that means exactly or nearly the same as this new word)? Can you think of an antonym (a word that means the opposite)?

Did you notice a shortcut in calculating the area of a rectangle? Multiply the number of rows by the number of squares in each, multiply the number of columns by the number of squares in each or multiply the length by the width.

  • Carry out an area trail at home and answer the following questions:

Which room in your house has the greatest area?

Which room has the smallest area?

If you live in a two-storey house – is the area of the upstairs floor exactly the same as the area of the downstairs floor?

What might cause these areas to be different? (e.g. do you have a downstairs extension or a porch)

Could the area of upstairs ever be greater than the area of downstairs?

English

  • Letter writing.

Write a pen pal letter to a friend in your class.

Tell them what you have been up to / how you are feeling / how you are occupying your time at home. Do you have any new hobbies or have you learnt any new skills e.g. baking, cooking? Ask some questions back to your pen pal – such as how they are getting on? What are they enjoying about being at home? What hobbies do they have?

Learn spellings 13 – 18 and put into a sentence: utensil, tendril, lentil, council, stencil, tranquil.

  • DEAR Time

  • Tarraing pictiúr de do chlann. Draw a picture of your family.

Scríobh faoi do chlann. Write about your family.

Write a few sentences as Gaeilge about your family and read it back aloud a few times to practice or read to someone in your house.  

You can go back over your Uimhreacha Pearsanta if you need to.

Mar shampla, for example:

Tá ceathrar i mo chlann. There are four in my family.

Tá deartháir amháin agam. I have one brother.

Oisín is ainm dó. Oisín is his name.

Would you need to know the area of a floor if you were buying a new carpet, lino (linoleum) or wood?

How do builders create lots of living space if they only have a small area to work in?

What is the area of a rectangle whose sides are:

Diary entry – Helpful tips

  • Include the date.
    • Begin your diary entry with “Dear Diary,” (or alternatively you can choose a name for your diary!)
    • Write about the events of your day in order – what did you do in the morning / afternoon / evening?
    • How did you feel?
    • Use the past tense.
    • Use order words such as “First / Then / Next / After that.”
    • You may like to include some illustrations around your diary entry.
    • You may wish to stick in food wrappers / labels of things that you like or used during the day.

Comic strip

  • Use a ruler to divide your page into the number of boxes that you will need.
    • Draw the main events of your day in the order in which they occurred.
    • Don’t forget to include the date on your comic strip.
    • You might like to include some text in the form of speech bubbles, labels or short sentences under the drawings.

Go back over your work yesterday and describe your family to someone or do a role-play with your pet, puppet or toy.

  • You will see Important Notice on the homepage offering you free access to the books. You will then see a table with different columns.
  • From the left-hand side tick Primary > 4th Class > Gaeilge > Léigh sa Bhaile > Léigh sa Bhaile Leabhar 4 > and then in the final resource column, if you untick the online book it will bring up the option for audio. You can access the mp3 audio recording of the comprehensions.
  • I would encourage children to listen to the recording a few times whilst following the text, then read along and finally read independently.
