Múinteoir Claire 22.06.20

Dear 6th Class,

As you head into your final week of primary school there are a few things I would like you to know:

I feel very privileged to have been your teacher and have enjoyed getting to know each and every one of you this year. Everyone has brought their own unique strengths and talents to our class, and this year wouldn’t have been the same without you!

I hope you have many happy memories to take with you from 6th class and from all your years at Naas CNS. My personal highlights from this year include watching your spelling dramas on Mondays (you always put on some show, all I was missing was the popcorn!!), hearing a good chorus of Peigín Leitir Móir, seeing you direct your Science Blast project from start to finish with your fantastic ideas, and always having the best projector-correctors on hand!

I hope you enjoyed your 6th class experience. This, of course, isn’t the ending we had originally envisioned for the year, but we plan to mark your graduation and make it just as special when we are able to.

I wish you all a wonderful first year in secondary school. It is normal to feel a little nervous ahead of a change, but it is an exciting time too- in secondary school you get to take much more ownership over your own learning and make lots of new friends, as well as keeping old ones, of course!

Finally, don’t be a stranger! Please come back to visit; past pupils are always welcome and I love to see familiar faces at my door!

Have a lovely summer,

I will miss you all,

Best wishes,

Múinteoir Claire

For your final week, the Active Schools committee have prepared a range of diverse and fun activities for you to try out, with lots of traditional sports day games. Take a look at the activities attached and try your best to complete as many as you can each day. Good luck!

I have also included some optional end of year activities such as word searches or mindful colouring pages in case anyone would like to do them.

If anyone has yet to complete their virtual yearbook please have them finished by this Wednesday, as we hope to publish the class book by the end of the week. Anyone who would still like to contribute to the graduation art or graduation poetry competition please send them on by Friday. If you need any more information on these activities, you will find a record of all our homework and attachments to date up on our school website (www.naascns.ie).

Finally, I would like to wish Lee a very happy birthday for next week, and advance birthday wishes to Ryan and Erin who have birthdays in July, and Szymon and Ethan who have birthdays in August!

Best wishes,

Múinteoir Claire

Running Activity

Rock Paper Scissors

Play with someone at home standing one metre apart and facing each other. Mark out two safe areas for each person. Each pair begins by performing a rock-paper-scissors routine. A rock is a closed fist, paper is a flat hand, and scissors are the index and middle fingers in a cutting position. Paper always covers rock, rock beats scissors, and scissors cut paper. To determine a winner, count to three and form a rock, paper or scissors. The winning person chases their partner toward their safety line, attempting to tag them before they are safe. Line up again and repeat the activity.

Traditional Sports Day Games

There are lots of games, races and traditions attached to school sports day. Games such as the egg and spoon race, the sack-race and the 3-legged race are all well-known sports day games. Let’s revisit them in a virtual setting:

Activity 1- Egg and spoon/ Spud and spoon race

Each person gets a spoon and an egg (hardboiled or plastic). Each person must carry their egg on their spoon from the starting line to a turnaround point and back again. If the egg is dropped, you must stop and retrieve it. You could make a relay at home.

Activity 2- Sack Race

Put both legs into a sack (shopping bag/ bin bag) and hop around a cone, or some marked point, and back. You could race other family members or make a relay.

Obstacle Course

Can you set up and run your own obstacle course? Use any equipment available- household or otherwise. Do the obstacle course, time yourself and see if you can beat your time. See some pictures attached in this week’s PDF. If you have no garden, create a small course inside. Be resourceful with everything you have at home.

Video Game Running Game

Why not try this running game with someone at home? Someone is “on” and shouts out a command as follows:

FAST FORWARD– Run!

REWIND– Run backwards!

PAUSE– Stop!

RECORD– Pull a silly face!

SLOW MOTION– Walk at a slow speed!

Kicking Activity 1- Through the Gate

In pairs, with one ball per pair (get creative if you have no ball- rolled up socks are good!)- each person stands on the spot facing their partner. Set up a “gate” between each pair using two cones (or tins of beans, cereal boxes- anything will do). Person A attempts to kick the ball to Person B through the gate. One point is awarded for each pupil that successfully kicks the ball through the gate. Single pupils could play the game against a wall. Increase the distance to increase the difficulty. Add some targets.

Kicking Activity 2- Kick to Score

Draw or stick target areas at various heights on a wall. Points should be placed in the centre of each target from one to five. The aim is to hit the targets on the wall to achieve a score. Who is the best in your house? Pupils could try to score a penalty against Mom, Dad or a big brother or sister.
